The family Caliciviridae comprises 11 genera (ICTV ratified in March 2019) of which viruses from the genus Norovirus and genus Sapovirus and a few rare strains in the genus Recovirus have been detected in fecal specimen from humans. Noroviruses can genetically be classified into 10 genogroups (G), 48 genotypes and 60 P-types and sapovirus into 19 genogroups and 35 genotypes. Of these, noroviruses GI, GII, GIV, GVIII, and GIX (formerly GII.15) and sapovirus GI, GII, GIV and GV infect humans.
